John Adelbert Parkhurst (1861-1925), US astronomer. Parkhurst was born in Illinois and studied at Rose Polytechnic Institute in Indiana. He operated a private observatory in Illinois, and in 1898 he joined the staff of the nearby, newly built, Yerkes Observatory. This observatory became one of the major US centres of the new science of astrophysics. Parkhurst later became Associate Professor at the University of Chicago. His speciality was photometry (measuring stellar spectra) and he took part in several eclipse expeditions. In 1905 he became a fellow of the American Astronomical Society.
