Schomburgk's deer (Cervus schomburgki), 19th century artwork. Native to Thailand, this deer was first described in 1863 by the English zoologist Edward Blyth (1810-1873). This deer species is thought to have become extinct in the 1930s. This artwork was published in The Royal Natural History, volume 2 (1894), edited by the English naturalist Richard Lydekker (1849-1915). The caption attributes the artwork to an earlier 1877 paper by the English zoologist Philip Sclater (1829-1913), published in the journal Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London.
