Eskimo curlew (Numenius borealis), 19th century artwork. This omnivorous shorebird was found in great numbers in the Americas, breeding in Alaska and Canada, and migrating southwards for the winter. It fed on berries, insects and molluscs. It is now thought to be either severely endangered or extinct, as there have only been infrequent sightings in the 20th century. Artwork printed in 1866.
