Ross Arctic expedition, 1829-33. Artwork of crew members from the expedition led by the British explorer Captain John Ross (1777-1856) to find the North-West Passage north of Canada. Here, the crew are preparing to leave the ice-bound HMS Victory in May 1832. They had been stuck since the winter of 1829, spending the time exploring the surrounding area. They walked to another ice-bound ship, long-since abandoned, and used that ship's longboats to escape the ice. They were eventually rescued by HMS Isabella in August 1833.
