Portrait of Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768), the German archaeologist was one of the founders of scientific archaeology.He was the first person to provide reliable data on the discoveries at Pompeii, Italy. Pompeii which had been buried by a volcanic eruption in AD79, was rediscovered in 1748. Winckelmann began studying the excavated remains in 1758. His writings on them, especially on art, made him Germany's \father of archaeology\". Winckelmann was murdered in Trieste, Italy"
