Hiram Revels (1822-1901) was the first of only four African Americans to serve in the U.S. Senate. In 1870 he was elected to finish the term of former Confederate president Jefferson Davis. After his term ended in 1871, he returned to Mississippi and headed Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College.
