Australopithecus afarensis skull. This is the fossilised skull of a 3 year old Australopithecus afarensis female known as Selam. The skull and other bones were found in Dikika, Ethiopa in 2000. They have been dated as 3.3 million years old. A. afarensis lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago and is thought to be an ancestor of modern humans.
