Lhasa, Tibet, 3D satellite image. North is towards upper left. Lhasa (elevation 3650 metres) is one of the highest cities in the world. It lies on the Tibetan Plateau, in the valley of the Lhasa River, within the Himalaya mountain range. Here, plant-covered land is red, barren land is brown, and man-made surfaces are silver or white. These include the Potala Palace and the Norbulingka (centre). Near these is the Lhalu Wetland Nature Reserve (dark red area). This image, around 30 kilometres across, was obtained by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra satellite, on 24 November 2005.
