Mimivirus. Computer artwork of an Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APMV) particle. APMV is commonly known as the mimivirus. This virus consists of outer hairs, or fibrils, and a protein capsid enclosing a core of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the virus' genetic material. APMV has the largest capsid diameter of all known viruses and has the largest viral genome at roughly 1.2 million base pairs. It is thought that it may cause viral pneumonia.
