This method was devised in 1796 by the British physician Edward Jenner (1749-1823), shown here at the Smallpox and Inoculation Hospital at St Pancras, London, England. This artwork, by the British caricaturist James Gillray (1756-1815), dates from 1802. This copy is from from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
