Kangaroo. Engraved plate showing a kangaroo standing on some rocks. The name kangaroo derives from the local Aboriginal language of the area around the Endeavour River where they were first seen by Western explorers. The local name, gangurru, refers to the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Macropus gigantus. This plate was published in An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty : for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, by John Hawkesworth, printed at London in 1773.
