Cliff with folded rock strata. These rock strata were formed as sediments were laid down at the bottom of ancient oceans. This folding is a chevron (zig-zag) folding that took place during the Variscan orogeny at the close of the Carboniferous era (300 million years ago). The Variscan orogeny, a period of uplifting and twisting of rocks from ancient seabeds, took place around 380 to 280 million years ago.
