Loeb respirator. 19th Century artwork of Bernhard Loeb wearing the respirator he invented. It consisted of a three-chambered metal canister, carried around the waist, enclosing a filtering system of liquid chemicals, granulated charcoal and porous wadding. A hose attached the canister to a mouth piece. Image from 'La Science Illustree' Louis Figuier (1895).
