1749 Copperplate engraving from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Compte de Buffon \Histoire Naturelle\", Volume II, Plate VIII. shows some of the various expressions shown by the human face 1. Crying, 2 Horror or fear 3. Contempt and derision, 4. Jealousy or malice, 5. Happiness and laughter. Buffon courted controversy by dealing with humans as objects worthy of study in a natural history text. This work on emotions predates by over 100 years the interest that Darwin would show in his \"Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals\" 1871."
