Detail of the eastern side of the Monument to the Discoveries by Jose Angelo Cottinelli Telmo and Leopoldo Neves de Almeida, Lisbon Portugal - The Monument to the Discoveries was inaugurated in 1960 during celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. The monument is designed in the shape of a caravel (a small ship), showing Henry the Navigator at the prow leading Vasco da Gama, Magellan and other Portuguese explorers.
