Joseph Lister (1827-1912), English surgeon, on his ward round in Glasgow Royal Infirmary c1867. A pioneer of antiseptic surgery, he was able to announce in 1867 that his wards had been clear of sepsis for 9 months.On left an assistant holds Lister's steam spray which produced a spray of carbolic acid (phenol) laden steam. Patient is handing Lister her broken doll and he sewed its leg back on for her. After pencil sketch.
