John Benbow (1653-1702) English naval commander born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Vice-Admiral 1701. In the West Indies, off Santa Marta, he encountered superior French forces under Du Casse on 19 August 1702. His leg shattered by chain-shot and deserted by his captains, he died in Jamaica of his wounds in October. Remembered as 'Brave Benbow'. Engraving after portrait by Godfrey Kneller.
