Mud covering of the floor was full of bone fragments from tiger, bear, elephant, rhinoceros, etc. which appeared to have be gnawed (by hyenas, it was thought). William Buckland (1784-1856) English geologist and clergyman, examined the remains and concluded that these animals had disappeared from Britain due to some catastrophe, such as the Biblical Flood.
