Eduard Suess (1831-1914) Austrian geologist, born in London. He proposed the previous existence of an old supercontinent which he named Gondwanaland (1861) and the Tethys ocean. His work founded the theory of continental drift. Engraving from Der Stein der Weisen (Leipzig c1895).
