Chromium. Granules of chromium, a hard, silvery transition metal used in the manufacture of alloy steels and as a decorative, corrosion-resistant electroplated coating. The metal is extracted from the mineral chromite, a double oxide of iron and chromium. Chromium was first identified by Vauquelin in 1797 and has the chemical symbol Cr.
