Standing wave on a vibrating string. This is a stationary transverse wave. The two ends are held stationary as the string is rapidly moved from side to side, creating a transverse wave with one whole wavelength between the two ends. At the middle of the spring is a third stationary point (or node) that does not move. The two peaks of the wave are called antinodes. A stationary wave is also called a standing wave.
