Glivec chemotherapy drug. Computer model of a molecule of the chemotherapy drug Glivec. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (silver), hydrogen (light blue), nitrogen (dark blue) and oxygen (red). This drug is used to treat chronic myeloid leukaemia, a cancer of white blood cells. The drug targets the abelson tyrosine kinase enzyme, whose overactivity causes the proliferation of white blood cells associated with the cancer. Although the drug has increased survival rates for patients with this cancer, a study published in 2006 has shown long term use could lead to heart failure. Glivec is manufactured by Novartis.
