At centre is a speckled, cup-shaped flower lip (labellum) which serves as a landing platform for pollinating insects. Within the cup, and rising above it, is the stalk (red) of the male anther. Two pollen- bearing pollinia (yellow) are seen at the tip of the anther. Each pollinia is a pod housing pollen grains. Pollinia are transferred to the body of the pollinating insect, and then to the stigmatic surface of another Cymbidium flower. Cymbidium cultivars have become popular greenhouse plants throughout the world. They originate from Asia and Australia.
