The butressed trunk of a tree in the rain forest of southern Trinidad. Buttresses differ in shape, size and thickness between species and families; they are particularly marked in Bombacaceae. Buttresses are support structures and are mainly found on uphill sides of trees and counterbalancing asymmetric or epiphyte laden crowns.
