False colour scanning electron micrograph of the surface of the of a marajuana plant, Cannabis sativa (family: Moraceae). The leaf surface is covered with long cystolyth hairs (containing calcium carbonate and other organic materials) and glandular trichomes. In the adult leaf, the trichomes may be seen to be of two types; capitate trichomes - those with heads, and peltate trichomes, which are rounded and closer to the leaf surface. Nodules of resin containing the euphoriant drug tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are exuded from the trichomes. Magnification: x60 at 6x6cm size.
