The flowers and seed pods (lower right) of Heironyma macrophylla, a wild member of the cocoa family, growing in the Amazonian rainforest of eastern Ecuador. The flowers are cauliflorous, growing directly from the trunk or older branches of the tree. This is quite common amongst rain- forest trees and may be associated with pollination or fruit dispersal by bats. Flowers arising in this way normally develop from supressed side shoots. The seed pods contain seeds embedded within a sweet, edible pulp.
