GM food. Two genetically-modified (GM) cobs of sweetcorn or maize in between which is a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) fingerprint or sequence. DNA fingerprinting is a technique which allows an organism's individual genetic code to be displayed visually. When a plant is genetically modified, foreign DNA is introduced into the plant's genes. Genetic engineering makes it possible to introduce DNA into an organism that may have originated in an entirely different species. The DNA may give the sweetcorn desirable characteristics such as resistance to fungal moulds, but risks tampering with the natural balance of nature.
