Desmosome. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an intercellular junction or desmosome (dark green, lower left). Desmosomes form the commonest type of junction between epithelial cells, providing points of cohesion and acting as anchorage points for the cell's cytoskeleton. Dense plaques are seen at the junction, lying immediately beneath the membranes. Fine fibres called tonofibrils (red) extend from the plaques into the cell cytoplasm on either side of the junction.
