False colour scanning electron micrograph of working velcro being pulled apart. A common fastener, velcro is a nylon material manufactured in two separate pieces, one with a hooked surface (right) & the other with a smooth surface made up of loops (left). The loops (smooth surface) are loosely woven strands in an otherwise tight weave. The hooks (right) are woven into the fabric & them cut. When the two surfaces are brought together they form a strong bond. Magnification: X10 at 35mm size. Original is bw print h120/058.
