Art forgery detection. Technician using a binocular optical microscope to examine a forged painting. This is a copy of a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). The microscope increases the amount of detail that can be seen, allowing areas of retouched paint to be found. By examining paintings through a microscope under ultraviolet or infra-red light, other features normally invisible to human eyes can also be revealed. This work is being carried out at the Doerner Institute in Munich, Germany, which is headed by Dr Andreas Burmester. The Institute specializes in detecting art forgeries by various imaging techniques and chemical analyses.
