Art forgery detection. Glass bottles containing various samples of old paint pigment used to detect forged paintings. By mass spectroscopy the molecular constituents of the pigments can be found. X-ray diffractometry will show their crystal structure. These chemical fingerprints" can be matched with those from samples of dried paint taken from a suspected forgery. This will reveal whether the pigments in the paint are contemporary with the original artwork. The photograph was taken at the Doerner Institute in Munich, Germany, which is headed by Dr Andreas Burmester. The Institute specializes in detecting art forgeries by imaging and chemical analysis."
