Statue restoration. Researchers in the caves of Arcy-sur-Cure, France, using limestone-secreting bacteria to restore statues. The caves consist of large limestone structures formed as water drips down through the rocks, and the bacteria live on the rocks and in the water. The bacteria are being sprayed on the statues to repair damage caused by many years of erosion. The research director (at centre) is Jean-Pierre Adolphe, at left is Jose Paradas, and at right is Francois Soleilhavoup. The researchers are from the Paris VI University, Paris, France.
