Robert Cailliau (born 1947), Belgian computer scientist and early developer of the World Wide Web (WWW or Web). Cailliau was educated at Antwerp and Ghent, and began his research career in automated data acquisition. After short Army service, he moved to CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. There he became involved in text processing, hence his involvement in the early days of the Web. Cailliau was instrumental in creating the method by which documents on different computers may be linked. He is seen with a graph showing the growth of traffic on the Web, a global computer network for free exchange of information. Photographed in 1995.
