Louis Lumiere (1864-1948), French pioneer of cinematography. Louis and his brother Auguste were the first cinematographers to screen popular motion pictures. They combined technical expertise (such as Edison's perforated film and claw movement) with real artistic flair to produce a number of impressive works. On 13 February 1895 they obtained a patent for their cinematographe", a combined camera and projector that operated at 16 frames a second. The first public showing was in Paris on 28 December of the same year. The film, which showed a train entering La Ciotat station, was taken from such an angle that the audience gasped with terror."
