Nicole-Reine Hortense Lepaute (1723-1788), French astronomer. In 1757 she was employed by the director of the Paris Observatory to calculate the pull of Jupiter and Saturn on Halley's Comet. This allowed the return of the comet in 1757 to be more accurately calculated. Other work by Lepaute included contributions to the Ephemeris, a book which gave the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets until 1792, which was widely used by navigators of the time.
