Charles Pravaz. Portrait of Charles Gabriel Pravaz (1791-1853), French engineer, surgeon and claimed inventor of the hypodermic needle. The equipment consisted of a hollow needle and a syringe for delivering drugs under the skin. It was thought that Pravaz had invented the needle in 1853 but it now seems likely that Scotsman Alexander Wood had independently devised it before him in the same year.
