Philippe Pinel (1745-1826), French psychiatrist and physician. Pinel pioneered the humane treatment of the mentally ill. This portrait is a detail from a painting depicting him freeing inmates at the Salpetriere Hospital, Paris (where he was chief physician) from their chains.
