Enlarged heart. Coloured X-ray showing a patient with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), or enlargement of the left ventricle (lower chamber). The heart is the blue mass at centre right, the diaphragm is at the bottom and the horizontal bands are the ribs. The left ventricle (bottom right of heart) pumps oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Coronary heart disease and other cardiac conditions can make the heart need to pump harder. As the heart is a muscle, it grows if it has an increased workload, leading to LVH. Treatment is of the underlying cause.
