Laryngitis. Endoscope view of the inflamed larynx (voice box) of a patient suffering from laryngitis. The vocal cords (v-shaped, lower left) are swollen. Laryngitis is caused by infection with bacteria or viruses or by irritation due to ingested chemicals. The swollen vocal cords lose their ability to vibrate and the voice becomes husky or is lost completely. The patient may also suffer breathing difficulties and a painful cough. Treatment involves resting the voice and remaining in a warm, moist environment. Bacterial infections may be treated with antibiotics.
