Severe malnutrition. A mother breast-feeding her severely under-nourished child. The child shows many signs of kwashiorkor syndrome, including thinning of the hair and skin, a variety of skin lesions, loss of pigmentation and severe ulceration. In such cases it is unusual to see a child feeding, as kwashiorkor is often associated with anorexia.
