Colonic polyp (pink), gross specimen. This polyp is a benign (non-cancerous) growth on the inner lining of the colon. The growth of polyps is common and in many cases they cause no symptoms. In some cases, though, the polyps can block the passage of food through the intestine. Some polyps also have a tendency to turn cancerous. In both cases, the polyps are surgically removed.
