Broken collar bone. Coloured X-ray of the left shoulder of a patient, showing a fracture of the collar bone (clavicle). The clavicle has snapped into two bits, one jutting upwards (upper centre) and the other jutting downwards (lower centre) in front of the shoulder blade (scapula, red, lower right) and ribs. The clavicle fragments are still joined to the other bones of the chest. The left fragment joins (far left) with the breastbone (sternum). The right section joins (lower right) to the scapula, next to the head of the humerus (green). The bone will need to be reset and pinned and a clavicle strap applied to immobilise the arm and shoulder to allow the bone to heal.
