Brain blood vessels. Historical anatomical artwork of the blood vessels of the human brain. This view is from the side. Part of the skin and skull and the outer membrane covering the brain (the dura mater) has been removed, showing the blood vessels running over the surface of the brain. Veins are blue and arteries are orange. The ear hole is seen, and in the neck at lower left the spine has been dissected in half lengthwise. Artwork from the 19th-century book Atlas of Anatomy, by Bourgery and Jacob. This book, which took over 20 years to complete, was published in France in 8 volumes from 1831 to 1854. It contained 726 colour plates covering both anatomy and surgical techniques.
