Medical manuscript. Sanskrit medical manuscript for the instruction of physicians in traditional Indian (ayervedic) medicine. The manuscript is illustrated with astrological symbols and mythological characters. Sanskrit is a language used by the upper castes of Indian Hindus for scientific and literary purposes. Ayervedic medical practitioners treat the patient by making empirical observations of the illness and cures. Treatment was mainly by herbal remedies but surgery was not unknown for extreme cases.
