Female reproductive organs, coloured X-ray. This is a hysterosalpingogram, where a contrast medium has been injected to show the female reproductive organs on an X-ray. The contrast medium appears as blue/green. This frontal view shows the contrast medium filling both the uterus (womb, centre) and the Fallopian tubes, the two branching structures on either side. The contrast medium has flowed out into the abdominal cavity. The Fallopian tubes are open-ended tubes that receive an egg (female sex cell) as it is released by one of the two ovaries. One lies at the end of each tube. A fertilised egg can implant in the uterus and develop into a baby.
