At centre is the uterus (womb), a hollow muscular organ in which the foetus develops during pregnancy. Fallopian tubes leave the top of the uterus on either side and lead to the ovaries, which store the female sex cells. Directly below the uterus is the bladder. The urethra (left) carries urine from the bladder out of the body. At lower centre is the vagina, which links the external genitals with the uterus. At right is the rectum, the end portion of the large intestine, which leads to the anus and expels faeces.
