False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a human lyphocyte cell undergoing a mitotic cell division in which 2 daughter cells with equal & identical chromosomes are produced. The cell is in anaphase stage: the cleavage of cytoplasm has begun, & the 2 chromatids of each chromosome have separated & are migrating along the spindle towards opposite poles of the cell. At end of anaphase, 2 groups of identical chromosomes are clustered at opposite poles of the cell. The spindle (not visible) is formed during prophase by migration of 2 pairs of centrioles to opposite poles of the cell, which remain joined by microtubules. Mag: x5000 at 6x6cm, x2500 at 35mm.
