Biogas production. External view of a gasification plant. Here gas is produced by using the dry pulp (bagasse) of the cereal sweet sorghum. Such gas may be used as a fuel for electricity generation with several advantages for the environment. These include a low emission of sulphur and nitrogen oxides which are the gases responsible for the production of acid rain. The carbon dioxide emitted during the burning process is balanced by the amount used by the plants during photosynthesis, giving a total zero impact on the environment. The site is situated in Italy and is part of a project on bioenergy funded by the Commission of European Communities.
