Fuelwood plantation. A field of young poplar (Populus sp.) trees being grown for fuelwood prod- uction. All these plants have been cut to ground level when one year old to stimulate the growth of multiple woody stems. The rows on the left show 15 months' growth after being cut. The smaller plants were cut three months ago. There are also two rows of willows (Salix sp.) among the older poplars, which have been treated similarly. Fuelwood is a form of renewable energy. After harvesting, the wood is converted into chips, which are burnt in special furnaces to release energy. This planta- tion is part of a government-sponsored trial taking place in Avon, UK.
