Nuclear fuel container. This is an Excellox irradiated nuclear fuel transport flask. It is used for the transport of low-enriched uranium fuels from PWR (Pressurised Water Reactor) nucelar power stations. Irriadiated fuel from overseas PWRs is shipped to Sellafield for reprocessing via Barrow-in-Furness docks from where it is transported by rail for the rest of its journey. This particular flask was photographed near Sellafield power station in Cumbria, England, after its arrival with a consignment of irradiated nuclear fuel from Japan. Part of the THORP processing plant and its chimney can be seen in the distance.
